Home security checklist for the festive season

Our blogs are usually focused on a range of things that are related to vehicles, but for this time of the year, we would like to shift down a gear and look at home security. We all look forward to the holidays when we can take some time off work and go away somewhere but for many people this happy time can be cut short when their home is broken into. Statistics show that crime increases during the festive seasons if you are going away over this time you should take some time to make sure that your home security is up to scratch.

Make ties with your community

Criminals target empty houses during the holidays, but how do they know that you aren’t there? They could have gotten some inside information from your staff or neighbouring staff, or they could have been observing your house to see if there is anyone there. It’s a good idea to give the illusion that there is someone in the house. You can do this by putting some of the lights in the house on a timer. Having a person regularly check in is advisable and so is letting your neighbours know that you are away so they will know to keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour on your property. Joining a WhatsApp group for your street or a Facebook group for your neighborhood will strengthen the bonds with your community which will help if something does go wrong. You could also consider getting a dog to deter intruders and give an alert to surrounding people.

Upping the ante on home security

It’s definitely advisable to follow the number one security rule of securing your perimeter. An effective fence or wall is a minimum requirement and electric fencing is a definite plus. Security gates on your doors are also important, and so are window bars. Many people these days have a security company on call, and if you don’t you might consider putting in a DIY security alarm system.Technology might also provide a solution for your security needs. In the past it was more expensive to install security gadgets but these days it’s easier on the pocket. You could install a security system with software, a digital video recorder and four cameras included. Hook the system up to the internet and you will be able to see what’s happening at your house anytime you like on your cellphone screen.
