Infographic: How to jump start a car

It's never a good feeling when you turn your car key and it doesn't start because of a flat battery. It can put the brakes on your road trip and it's certainly not a great way to end an evening out. But it doesn't have to be a disaster as long as you are prepared with some jumper leads and knowhow. Here’s our step-by-step guide for jumpstarting a car.

Park the vehicle with (good) donor battery close to the one with the dead battery. Ensure that they are not touching and the brakes of both are engaged.

  1. Identify a (red) positive end of the jumper cables. Attach it to the (red) positive terminal of the dead battery.
  2. Attach the other end of the (red) positive cable to the (red) positive terminal of the (good) donor battery.
  3. Attach a (black) negative end of the jumper cables to the (black) negative terminal of the dead battery.
  4. Attach the other end of the (black) negative cable to a clean, metallic, part of the engine such as the frame. Attaching here will help you to avoid explosions caused by sparks.
  5. Now you are ready to start the vehicle with the (good) donor battery. Let the engine run for a minute before starting the other vehicle. Allow the dead battery to take the charge and then disconnect the cables beginning with the (black) negative clamps. Do not let the clamps touch.

If you can’t jump start your car battery in this way, then you might have to replace your battery or consider that there might be something else affecting your car including fuses, battery corrosion, faulty alternator, ignition switch or starter connection.
