Jan Smuts Avenue all set for a road upgrade

Joburg is in for some traffic headaches when the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) plans to perform a road upgrade on Jan Smuts Avenue. This is a new phase in infrastructure upgrades in the city.

The JRA plans to turn Jan Smuts Avenue into a dual carriageway from Northwold Drive in Saxonwold to Bolton Road in Rosebank. This will include the stretch from Zoo Lake to Bompas Road and from Eighth Avenue to Kent Road in Rosebank.

The JRA assures the public that it will be worth it in the end because the upgrades will make these routes more mobile and also relieve congestion on this main arterial route that leads into the city.

Areas that are affected

The R87 million project will span two years. Tim Truluck, DA ward councillor for the area, said the road upgrade would affect Saxonworld, Parkwood, Rosebank, Parktown North, Dunkeld and Dunkeld West.

Geotechnical study

The JRA conducted a geotechnical study to prepare for this project. It also had to consider the location of Jan Smuts Avenue, which is situated in a densely populated urbanised area. The JRA looked at the effects the upgrade would have on people who live in the community and those who travel through the area because this is a popular route that leads into the Johannesburg CBD.

Improved public transport

Part of the plan involves extending bus routes. City of Johannesburg Transport MMC Nonhlanhla Makhuba said: "The proposed upgrade also allows for the inclusion of planned bus rapid transit lanes as part of the City's integrated transport network plan."
