SA road safety statistics give cause for concern

Every day, road accidents cause deaths and injuries in South Africa. Our country has one of the highest accident rates in the world, according to the International Road Traffic and Accident Database (IRTAD), four times higher than the average in our member countries. The data supplied in this report was submitted by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), which is overseen by the Department of Transport. The RTMC joined IRTAD in 2016.

Road fatalities on the rise

The report states that although we have made strides in reducing  the number of road accident fatalities since their peak in 2006, there has unfortunately been a spike in deaths in recent years. In 2015, there was a 2% increase from the previous year, this grew to 9% in 2016. There were 14 071 road fatalities in this period, which amounted to a fatality rate of 25.2 per 100 000 inhabitants.

The Department of Transport aims to make roads and roadsides safer, strengthen traffic law enforcement, set safer speed limits, promote the development of safer vehicles and encourage people to behave more cautiously on the road. It has appealed for the support of stakeholders, communities and individuals to successfully implement these measures. The department’s main road safety target is to halve the number of fatalities by 2030.

Areas of concern

  • In 2016, 38% of fatalities were pedestrians with children being particularly affected. Other fatalities consisted of 33% who were vehicle passengers and 26% of vehicle drivers. This underlines the particular need for road safety education and awareness for pedestrians.
  • Accident reports from 2015 show that 5.5% of fatalities involved a driver with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit, while 1.8% were pedestrians with a blood alcohol content above the legal limit.
  • Many accidents are caused by drivers being distracted by passengers in their vehicles, using electronic devices while driving, eating or drinking.
