SED Initiative: Bulamahlo Home & Day Care Centre

Bulamahlo Home & Day Care Centre was established in 1989 by Mrs. Regina Sekgoebela in Lifateng Section, Tembisa. The home operates as a crèche and day-care centre providing education and child care services to the community of Tembisa. The home gradually became a referral for abandoned, orphaned or homeless children by Police Stations and Social Services around Tembisa and Ivory Park. Because of her love for children ‘Mama Sekgobela’ could not refuse. The demand of feeding and clothing these children then increased. In 2008 she had to apply to the Department of Social Welfare to become a Non-Profit Organisation to raise more funds to keep the home and day care centre running. At the moment they have 20 children attending the crèche for daycare and 20 children requiring full time care.

The Avis Fleet Administration and Operation Legal teams chose this centre as their SED initiative in order to contribute to the sustainable development of this community. The team had loads of fun with the children and developed a deeper connection once they got to spend more time with them. Team members were happy to donate but found that it was even better to be in the moment and experience the actual joy on the recipients’ faces once they saw the team members cared enough to come with the aid in person. When the SED programme was announced SED Champion Themba Hlutwas was so pleased to be part of the initiative as this is something close to his heart. “There’s vast satisfaction one feels from assisting someone else”, states Themba. I love helping the needy people in any way I can, I know we can make a huge difference by touching the lives of those who are less fortunate, I look forward to more projects.”

On the 1st of August 2016 the team arrived with resources for Bulamahlo Centre including two refrigerators and food parcels. The SED team pledged to send food parcels to the home every month going forward.
