SED Initiative: St. Monicas Childrens Home

This home and youth care centre is situated on the Bluff in KZN and is a non-governmental institution caring for orphaned and vulnerable children. The institution aims to provide a safe environment for children through residential care and developmental programmes with the goal of eventual reunification with their families and/or communities. “Through its human and material resources, St. Monica's Children's Home strives to create, within children; beauty and strength. Through love and care, inner healing is to take place enabling children to reach their full potential.”

The centre opened its doors in 1895, operating from a shack in Umgeni Road in central Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal driven by a missionary named Miss Snell. The Institution is a centre for sustainable development, it’s registered to accommodate 84 children and youth. The ages of the children range from 3 to 18 years for girls and 3 to 12 years for boys. Their secondary service is aimed at providing a range of non-residential services for children and families to improve their quality of life in order to minimise the need for residential care.

Staff members from Avis Fleet Kwa-Zulu Natal were very happy to show they care about sustainable development by giving resources and spending some time at this centre. On the 15th of July 2016 members from the Intelligent Fuel Management (IFM), and Trade and Auction teams from KZN visited children at the home. They donated some much needed groceries and enjoyed spending some time with the kids.

“It was a very emotional day once again; these little ones show such appreciation for the little that they have. It really makes me grateful for what I have in my life. It was lovely to touch the hearts of these kids once again.” Simone Crocker
