SED Initiative: the CHOC Foundation

The Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC) was founded in 1979 as a support group for parents of children with cancer, by parents of children with cancer. The aim of the organisation is to ease the burden on parents facing the scary journey of supporting children with cancer. CHOC provides access to relevant and accurate information, as well as emotional and practical support. From the outset, CHOC provided support in hospital wards, hence the name Children’s Haematology Oncology Clinics, or CHOC. Gradually, parent groups were set up in more key centres, where the major state-funded academic hospitals are located and paediatric oncologists practise.

The Home does not receive funding from the government. It relies on donations from caring corporates, individuals and parents of children with cancer. Funds raised are used to provide all-encompassing support, from direct practical help to the children and their families and those involved in the treatment, to necessary equipment.

The marketing department at Avis Fleet decided to help raise funds to support the CHOC Foundation, they were happy to support sustainable development in the community by supporting this initiative. Inspired by World Cancer Day on February 4, staff members raised funds by selling raffle tickets to the rest of the Avis Fleet organisation. It offered a Valentine’s Day hamper as a prize. Winners were announced on Valentine’s Day, and employees looked forward to it. The marketing department used the proceeds to buy items for the CHOC Foundation wishlist including laptops, groceries, and toiletries. On February 24, the marketing department, together with the SED champions, delivered the items to the home. Staff members agreed that it was a very worthwhile cause, and they were happy to have been part of it.

“As a fleet management company, we are happy to have made a difference in the lives of these children and wish them well moving forward with all future endeavours and overall improvement in health-related matters.” Candice van Wyk, Marketing Officer.
