SED initiatives: John Wesley Children's Home

A home away from home for teenage girls who’ve been neglected, abused, or abandoned. John Wesley Children’s Home was established in November 1999 and registered by the Department of Social Development in January 2004. The girls range between the ages of 12 and 18 and attend local schools in Kempton Park. The vision of the home is to see abandoned and neglected teenage girls lead stable lives and reach their full potential as responsible adults contributing to society in a positive way. After the girls turn 18, they can choose to finish their schooling and the home will help them with their tertiary studies or find sustainable employment.

Avis Fleet’s Customer Administration department decided that they would like to help the community and support social development by choosing John Wesley Children’s Home as their SED initiative. They were very happy to give the home a financial donation and also offer aid in other ways. Thembi Khomane, SED Champion for the department, believes the initiative is a great way to share their blessings with the less fortunate. The upliftment of a community is an integral part of growing as a person and a company. “Seeing people flourish into something they thought was impossible makes one’s heart fulfilled.”

The SED team raised funds for the home’s matric farewell. Members of staff from Avis Fleet’s Customer Administration department said they hoped that they were able to help make this a memorable occasion for the students.

According to Thembi, they were also really happy to be able to provide household items and perishable goods. Previously they have brought personal items including pajamas and slippers, and also useful technology including power banks and hard drives.

The students have also gotten the benefit of the expertise of some of the staff members: Lorraine Van Niekerk goes to the home on weekends to give the students baking lessons, showing that our staff members really care about sustainable development.
