Use smart fleet management to combat cybercrime

Incidents of cybercrime are becoming more prominent in news headlines. And with so much of our business now online and more of our data stored online, all businesses – including fleet and transport businesses – are at risk from cybercrime. It’s becoming increasingly important to take the proper precautions to protect yourself.

How does cybercrime affect fleets?

Businesses that employ fleets (including cars, trucks, trains and planes) benefit from technology like Telematics that can use GPS technology to track the location and even the condition of their vehicles. This means that Fleet Managers store a lot of information about their fleet in a digital space. This includes information about vehicles, infrastructure and sensitive customer information. A breach of security could mean financial losses or damage to property or infrastructure.

Fleets – including cars, trucks and other vehicles – work on complex IT systems. These systems are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Rail systems especially, are dependent on IT for running complicated schedules that avoid crashes. These rail systems form an important part of our country’s infrastructure. What would happen if they were hacked?

How to protect your fleet

As the industry becomes more digitised, there is also more risk of a cyberattack. Every fleet operating company could potentially be a victim of cybercrime. Make sure you have the necessary security measures in place, which will help to prevent cybercrime or limit the damage of cyberattacks if they do occur.

Be proactive about security:

  • Outdated software isn’t secure, make sure you update yours regularly.
  • Educate all employees about security and draft a security policy (some of the points in this list are applicable).
  • Use strong passwords that aren’t predictable (the most common passwords are “password” and “admin”).
  • Use passwords that contain upper and lower case, characters and numbers.
  • Change passwords regularly.
  • Don’t use the same password for different platforms.
  • Inform employees not to download suspicious-looking files at work.
