The fleet industry hasn’t been as dramatically changed by technology as, for example, the entertainment and retail industries. But will this change as we enter a new decade?

Innovations in the pipeline are set to transform the industry in the coming years. In this series, we take a look at ideas that will affect the future of the fleet.

Clean energy and the future of fleet operations

The World Economic Forum says that the number of cars worldwide will double by 2040 to accommodate the needs of a growing middle-class population.

We will undoubtedly require more fuel and, in a world where environmental issues are increasingly important to consumers, we are looking to cleaner energy sources.

Fleet companies have not yet made great progress in switching over to more environmentally friendly fuel, but there has been some progress in finding clean energy sources.

What will the cleaner fuels and energy for the fleet industry be?

Different combinations of energy are likely to be adopted to suit different fleet requirements. In the coming years, we are likely to have fleets with fuel cell electric, gas-to-liquid, biofuel, hybrid and liquefied petroleum gas vehicles.

New energy sources include liquid natural gas and compressed natural gas.
