Inspiring a world of difference with Mikateka Primary School

Continued support with a new project

In 2018, Avis Fleet continued its support of the school. It partnered with the Maths Genius Leadership Institute with the objective of training the teachers to become better educators in mathematics and the ultimate goal of creating a good foundation for the students. The Department of Education has identified maths skills development as critical to empowering disadvantaged people in our country. We are happy to report that the initiative was a great success and in 2018, the Grade 3 learners participated in a mathematics Olympiad and were placed second in Gauteng.

Encouraging a love of reading

In 2019, Avis Fleet sponsored a library at the school in response to a need in the community. We bought a container for this purpose and converted it, decorating it with the assistance of a graffiti artist. Employees donated books and we ran internal raffles and competitions to bolster funds to add to the collection, raising R20 000. The Avis Fleet organisation matched the R20 000 as corporate social investment, bringing the total to an impressive R40 000.

Members of staff also took part in getting the library ready for the handing-over ceremony which took place in October 2019. We sourced shelving for the library and a software system to ensure that the books were accounted for, as well as training for teachers on how to use the system and run the library successfully. IT department donated a PC to the school and we sourced book suppliers, namely Juta and Jonathan Ball (part of Media24), and books to the value of R38 000.

We are proud of our partnership with Mikateka Primary School and look forward to supporting the school in 2020 and beyond. Another initiative that we are embarking on is the sponsoring of ABET training for the parents of the schoolchildren.
