You might’ve heard of the Internet of things, meaning the interconnection of devices using Internet technology, but did you know what this could mean for cars, or fleets? It’s transforming the world around us: from smart lighting to fridges that can let you know when they’re running low on milk, there are even interactive toys that make use of this technology. So how will the Internet of things affect the vehicles that we drive? And how will connectivity between devices transform the fleet industry?
What’s on the horizon for connected cars?
According to this report from McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, the focus for cars is increasingly on optimising their operation and maintenance while ensuring the convenience and comfort of drivers and passengers using onboard sensors and Internet connectivity. According to a worldwide survey of 2000 new buyers, 13% of them wouldn’t consider a new vehicle without Internet access and more than a quarter prioritise connectivity features. But there is also significant reservation about connectivity. 37% of respondents said they wouldn’t consider buying a connected car because they were worried about digital safety and data privacy.
Our technology working for you
Tracking devices are widely used to locate a stolen or hijacked vehicle. Avis Fleet has further refined tracking technology through its Telematics solution, where driver behaviour is analysed with the goal of reducing costs. This tool can gauge if a driver is speeding, over-revving, idling, braking too fast, taking an inefficient route to carry out business activities, as well as pinpointing when the driver begins and ends his/her car journey. Moreover, the system alerts drivers when they are speeding, allowing him/her to correct the situation before it escalates. The Avis Fleet Telematics solution drives down accident rates, vehicle maintenance costs and fuel consumption. For more information about telematics click here.
